Practicum Midterm Report

The opportunity to be a part of a News Practicum course as a freshman has been a great experience to me. The class is just there so that we can go out into the field and get some experience with what I passion is. Broadcast journalism isn’t all sitting behind a desk and read a teleprompter; it’s about going in to the field and being up close to the action to understand the atmosphere of the area that we are working. I have had the opportunity to work at a couple of the games here on campus and I have learned so much from both John and Kevin. The amount of information that I have learn from them in the short weeks that I have known them is astounding.
I was able to work one of the night volleyball games with Kevin. It was my first time ever really using a camera to capture the action live. Having Kevin there to calm my nerves was good because when they told us that they were going to use this footage for their work I didn’t want to mess it up. I first worked the camera and try to follow the ball as much as I could and try not to lose track of it. Kevin showed me how to really get a good shot of the serve in to play and told me to have breaks from just game action and to get shots of the crowd or a time out or Mocie doing something with the fans. That game the Moc’s completely dominated their opposition that day. I did the same thing for next day when the Mocs were back in action. My favorite experience so far has been working the women’s home opener where interviews were our learning point of the day.
This was the first soccer game that I attend at this school. The girls’ soccer team was playing against far inferior competition that day. They put up four goals on twenty shots and it would have been five if not by a great save by the goalie. After the game was over John came over from the volleyball game that he was covering to come and help us conduct an interview. I went over to the coach and asked him if would do an interview with us. He agreed and asked one of his players to also give one. The player that the coach called over seemed very nerves to be on camera but John was able to control the interview and was able to calm the player down. Just having those two guys there help us so much.
In all I have about eight hours of work in so far; however, I will be working on Mocs Sports team so I should have more opportunities to go out and cover games. I am really thankful for all of the opportunities that I have been given to get experience in my field and I hope that I will be able to use all of the knowledge that I have gain to good use.
