For my final report i wanted to talk about my favorite ESPn reporter Stephen A smith. Smith has been a reporter with espn for the last 6-7 years he comes from hollis, queens NYC, and is a dead hard NY fan. His love of competition is what makes him such a great reporter. he has been working as a reporter for the past 16 years. After graduating from Winston-Salem State University, Smith’s journalism career began as a high school sportswriter at the New York Daily News in the summer of 1993. He has a love sports so much that he has been a dominate member in the african American community over the last almost 2 decades. He has cover everything from college basketball, football to now his dream job of covering the National Basketball association. He was the beat writer for the Philadelphia Basketball team to then become the General Columnist at ESPN in late 2003. Becoming only the 21th african american to do so at the time. He inspires me to go out everyday and give it my all because he comes from the same place I do and has the chance to go out and do something great with his life. He currently works on two radio hows for ESPN, and sits in and talks on the set about the NBA. i tweet him almost everyday about who inspires him but i guess he doesn't have the time to tweet me back. All in all I look up to him and home i can do just half of the things that he has been able to accomplish.

Intro to Broadcast Live to Tape Production

Recap
This project made me think about what I can get better at as a broadcast journalist major. Workings in the studio really helped me get more comfortable with working with different tools that I didn’t use my first year of college. I felt that everyone did a great job in their respective rolls. There was not really anyone that was lazy and that didn’t want to do anything. The ideas that were brought up were really good and the fact that Maggie and Sarah were both excellent when it came to organizing everything that needed to be done for that day. The ideas that we came up with as a class were really good, but what made it better was the fact that we actually went out together and got all the things that we wanted accomplished done. Something will help us next time is being aware of the time. Ten minutes isn’t a lot of time and we should have more of a balance between videos and studio time. What I can do better is have more of a leadership role in the studio. I felt that I didn’t speak up as much as I could have when we were in the actual studio, so that would be something that I can personally work on to make myself better. Hopefully we can all get A’s on this and boost our grades.

Final Blog

This pass year I have learned a lot this year about mass media and doing all of m hours on time. This semester I was able to enjoy working on the projects that I did and not stress about getting my hours in on time like I had to do the first semester I was in college. I feel like I became John’s twin over this past semester and for the year because I consistently went over to him for help with anything that I needed help on. But I also realized that it’s more than just working in front of a camera and trying to read off a screen. It takes a team of people to come together and to work on certain items that makes the show run smoothly. A director, camera man, audio listener, and someone on the teleprompter make it so that whoever is on the screen will look good. I have done all of these jobs maybe about a hundred times now and I still think that people have to come and help me out while I’m doing it. Having the experience of doing all of these things makes me think that next year is going to be a breeze. Going out to the fields to cover games was probably my favorite part of the entire year. I love watching sports and being able to take all of it down and be able to edit the things that I shot just makes me excited. I do have some sports that I really don’t like to film or watch. I love Volleyball, I think it’s a great sport to play and that our team is one of the best in the country, but I hate filming it. It’s so hard just too actually get something decent on film when the ball just keeps getting smacked around all over the place. Next year, hopefully, we will be able to find an easier way to film the Lady Mocs, but it wasn’t the easiest thing to do. It wasn’t easy as well to have that be the first thing I ever film at FSC. John, and Kevin at the time, made it easy for me to learn exactly what I need to do to be able to become better at my craft. It’s going to be scary next year being that it’s going to be John’s last here, and I hope that I , and along with my other practicum peers, can step up and take over for him when he leaves. It will definitely be different not having him around to make fun of or to just talk to about how much I hate the Red Sox. But all in all I think that this was a great freshmen year and I think that next year I will be able to learn so much more form all of the great teachers I will have next year. This was an amazing time and I wouldn’t change anything about it.

Recommendation

Hey Dr. Bradford I didn't know any other way to reach you other then writing a blog. I would really like it if you could write me a recommendation letter to become a  Southern Ambassador. The application says that I need a recommendation written and placed in a sealed envelope attached to my application. If I could please have this in the next 2-3 days that would be very much appreciated.  I know that this is kind of sort noticed and I apologize for that, but it would mean a lot to me if you would please fine some time out of you busy life to write this for me. Thank you and I will see to in class on Friday.

Midterm

This semester I was able to do a lot more with John, Colleen, and Anna in broadcast. This semester it has been better for me to try and get as many hours in as I could because it helped me learn so much more at a faster rate then what I did last semester. Me john and Tony have still been doing our weekly broadcast  which has help a lot in terms of learning how to exactly edit and fix all of our mistakes. Working without Kevin this semester feels different because he actually taught us a good amount of being on camera and making sure that you are able to pronounce all of the words that you are trying to say when you are on the air. But the most interesting thing that I have done so far is getting an interview with the people in the Career center. The people in there were very helpful in my search to get all of my questions answered and understanding how someone can walk in to their office at anytime and ask any question they want about their career or about writing a resume or just how to improve on their qualities as a college student. Also seeing Colleen in front of the camera help a lot because before then I had only seen John or Kevin giving their usual talk on Moc Sports Talk, not to say that Kevin or John are bad at what they do, but it was interesting to see someone other than those two talk about something other than sports. She seems very confident in what she is doing and how she goes out and does her job, and prepares very well for what she about to do every time she goes out and does her show. Getting the stories for Anna has been a very interesting thing as well because I can’t just think about it last second because it will not sound as good as she expects it to be. It takes time to think about the blogs that we have to send her. But after saying all of that I still like going to all of the basketball, baseball, and softball games this season. All of Mocs Sports have been on point this year. It is very easy to cover sports when the teams that you cover win as much as our teams do. Having different people come in and be interviewed by us has also been something that has been so amazing because we can actually ask them questions about how they were feeling at a specific point in the game instead of inferring. For the rest of the semester John talked to use about having me and tony do our podcast more by ourselves and also being able to be on camera which I think is so amazing for me being a freshmen. Well I’m sorry this is about 22 mins late but I completely forgot about it because I was studying for my history test later in the day so I hope the penalty isn’t too bad.
